Startups are Revolutionizing the RTD Coffee Market – CoffeeTalk
The landscape of coffee consumption is shifting from traditional brewing methods to a newer generation of ready-to-drink (RTD) products, which are being innovated by startups that offer unique flavor profiles and familiar ingredients. Notably, Beekeeper Coffee and Yah Yah Yah are stepping into this market with differentiated offerings. Beekeeper Coffee, based in Los Angeles, launched its RTD cold brew lattes direct-to-consumer in September 2023, while Yah Yah Yah from Denver introduced Middle Eastern-inspired flavors through both DTC and retail channels in May.
The RTD coffee and tea market has shown impressive growth, reaching $8.4 billion in sales over the last year, with cold brew leading in growth at 92%, according to market researcher Circana. David Creech, co-founder of Beekeeper Coffee, expressed that despite the rapid expansion of RTD coffee, the market remains filled with traditional brands lacking innovation and cultural connections, opening opportunities for new entrants like their company.
Beekeeper utilizes honey for flavor and label cleanliness, targeting younger consumers such as Gen Z and millennials who value ingredient transparency. Honey not only enhances the sweetness but also adds a fuller flavor, creating a balance for the beverage without overwhelming sweetness. Similarly, Yah Yah Yah draws on personal family traditions, using honey alongside other authentic ingredients to develop its unique offerings, ensuring they are not overly sweet.
Both brands have crafted distinct flavor profiles to differentiate themselves in a crowded category. Beekeeper offers flavors such as black, caramel, mocha, vanilla, horchata, and a unique hot honey variety, which draws upon trends in the broader food landscape. Yah Yah Yah’s lineup includes Dubai mocha, baklava latte, and cardamom latte, catering to consumers’ increasing interest in globally inspired tastes.
The integration of culturally significant flavors can pose challenges, but consumer feedback has generally been favorable, allowing first-time experiences with ingredients like cardamom. Yah Yah Yah’s commitment to treating coffee as the drink’s foundation underscores the importance of balance in flavor profile, ensuring that each ingredient complements rather than overshadows the coffee itself.
As they navigate a competitive market, both companies aim for increased distribution and brand awareness. Beekeeper has already ventured into various retail channels such as Erewhon and Target, supported by recent investments. Their future innovation strategy focuses on flavors that resonate within the realms of food and culture. Meanwhile, Yah Yah Yah has been accepted into accelerator programs that promise to expand its outreach and product development, emphasizing the exploration of Middle Eastern flavors in its future creations. Overall, the innovation momentum in the RTD coffee segment presents an exciting frontier for both established and emerging brands.
