Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol has pledged to engage in “good faith” with the union representing workers at around 500 stores, despite preferring a direct relationship with employees. In a letter to union leaders, Niccol emphasized the need for constructive engagement, despite his preference for a direct relationship with employees. A bargaining delegation representing over 10,500 workers urged him to continue the spirit of mutual respect and the company to act boldly, be forward-thinking, and set high standards for employees. Starbucks and its union began talks earlier this year to achieve collective-bargaining agreements and provide a fair process for union organizing. Niccol’s appointment as Starbucks CEO raised concerns that progress would stall due to the response to unionization at his previous employer, Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. He emphasized the importance of improving baristas’ experience and respecting workers’ right to join a union. Starbucks shares have advanced 23% since Niccol was announced as CEO on August 13, more than three times the 7.3% advance of the S&P 500 Index over the same period.
