OxBarrier, a sustainable food and beverage packaging company, has launched its first technology licensing programme for its single-serve compostable coffee capsule technology. The patented technology includes an integrated oxygen barrier to maintain freshness and flavor while addressing environmental concerns associated with traditional single-serve coffee capsules. The European Patent Office has reinforced OxBarrier’s intellectual property portfolio, upholding the validity of multiple patents after contentious proceedings. With patents granted in over 30 countries, including key European markets, Canada, and Australia, OxBarrier is preparing for global partnerships and licensing opportunities.

The company aims to meet the growing consumer demand for environmentally friendly, high-performance single-serve coffee options by adopting this compostable technology. OxBarrier’s compostable capsules may offer a solution to the pressing issue of capsule waste, which generates an estimated 576,000 tonnes of capsule waste each year and millions ending up in landfills.

OxBarrier’s managing director, Boele Oltmans, believes that their technology allows brands to offer compostable capsules without sacrificing quality or shelf life. Other packaging companies are also making efforts towards sustainable food and beverage packaging, such as Royal Vaassen, which introduced recyclable barrier paper solutions designed to meet stringent food safety and recyclability standards.
