Nespresso Discontinues its Paper-Based Compostable Coffee Capsules and Returns to Single-Use Aluminum Pods – CoffeeTalk
Nespresso has decided to discontinue its paper-based, home-compostable coffee capsules, a shift from its 2023 initiative intended to offer a sustainable alternative to aluminum single-use capsules. This decision, confirmed by Nestlé in late September, stems from consumer feedback highlighting concerns over the limited shelf life and overall user experience of the compostable capsules. Nespresso emphasized that it will now concentrate on aluminum capsules, arguing that aluminum is superior for preserving the taste and aroma of coffee. The company’s statement reinforced their belief in aluminum as the optimal material for ensuring coffee quality.
This reversal occurs amid ongoing efforts by coffee equipment and packaging manufacturers to devise more sustainable options beyond traditional single-use capsules. Notably, Lavazza has introduced plastic-free Tablì coffee tablets as part of this exploration. Despite such innovations, single-use coffee capsules remain challenging for conventional recycling systems; their small size complicates sorting, and residual coffee grounds must be separated from other recyclable materials, intensifying the need for viable solutions in managing coffee capsule waste.
