WatchHouse, a luxury coffee chain based in London, is expanding its presence in the United States, recently opening a fourth location in Manhattan and planning additional shops in cities like Los Angeles, Austin, Chicago, and Miami. The company offers premium coffee, such as the $32 Bambito Estate, which is the most expensive item on its new midtown menu. This high-priced coffee is made from beans sourced from a family farm in Panama and is served with a side of cold-brewed green tea to enhance the tasting experience.

WatchHouse was founded in 2014 by CEO Roland Horne, who transformed a 19th-century building in London into a café. Its backers include HighPost Capital, established by Mark Bezos, brother of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. The brand represents a fusion of luxury and accessibility, with its menu catering to both coffee connoisseurs and casual drinkers, offering options as affordable as $4 for a straight black coffee.

Despite skepticism surrounding the high-priced coffee, market research indicates that coffee aficionados are willing to splurge for exceptional quality. Emily Murawski from Datassential noted that consumers generally will pay more for coffee if they know the quality is significantly improved. Some reviews have been mixed; while one patron felt the presentation of their drink was lackluster, others praised WatchHouse’s offerings as above average. Robert Byrne of Technomic emphasized that while a $30 coffee may not fit everyday scenarios, special occasions invite less price sensitivity.

The Bambito Estate, along with other drinks in the Rarities line, comes from limited supply sources, which drives up the price due to labor-intensive cultivation and preparation methods. Assistant house manager Isaac V. Morales highlighted the careful selection of beans, emphasizing traceability and sourcing from farmers who ensure optimal ripeness. WatchHouse employs a pour-over method for brewing, leading to a smoother, more flavorful coffee experience that takes about 7 to 10 minutes to prepare. This approach aims to create a unique tasting experience, transcending the simple desire for caffeine and inviting a more mindful consumption.
