Despite Price Hikes, Coffee Consumption In The US Continues To Rise – CoffeeTalk
A new report from the National Coffee Association (NCA) has revealed that two-thirds of American adults drink coffee daily, with an average of three cups consumed per day. The report, published in its Spring 2025 National Coffee Data Trends (NCDT) report by Dig Insights, found that the average coffee drinker consumes three cups per day on average. Overall consumption rates have grown 7% compared to 2020.
The NCA’s president and CEO, Bill Murray, stated that coffee holds a unique place in Americans’ daily lives and expects America’s love affair with coffee to continue for many decades. The five-year growth trend is driven by the increased consumption of specialty coffee, which has increased by nearly 18%. Traditional coffee consumption remains steady, with 42% of adults consumed during the past day in January 2025, compared to 43% in 2020.
In the specialty category, past-day consumption of espresso-based beverages increased by 17%, while non-espresso-based beverages jumped by nearly 42%. While the number of Americans having specialty coffee in the past day has increased dramatically between 2020 and 2025, the proportion of traditional coffee consumed compared to specialty coffee has remained consistent.
The study found that 71% of past-day coffee drinkers had coffee prepared at home only in 2025, 16% had coffee prepared out of home only, and 13% had coffee prepared both at and out of home. Grocery stores remain the most popular place to purchase coffee, but the number of past-day coffee drinkers who purchased online doubled from 7% in 2020 to 14% in 2025.
Drip coffee makers are most prevalent in American households, but single cup brewers, instant coffee, bean-to-cup machines, and other set ups are increasingly popular. The report also found that 62% of American adults have a drip coffee maker at home, 42% have a single-cup brewer, 35% have instant coffee, 15% have a bean-to-cup machine, 12% have a French press, 12% have an espresso machine, 11% have a slow-drip cold brew setup, and 6% have a pour-over coffee maker.
