Costa Coffee, a prominent coffee chain in the UK, is implementing a significant pay rise for over 16,000 employees across its branches, effective April 16. This marks the company’s seventh increase since 2021, highlighting its ongoing commitment to its workforce. Baristas will see their hourly wages rise to £13.12 from £12.60, facilitated by a £7 million investment by the company. Team leaders and Barista Maestros will also receive pay increases, with their rates adjusted from between £12.93 and £13.43 to a new rate of £13.75.

In Central London, Baristas will earn an additional £1 per hour compared to the national rate, elevating their pay to £14.12, while Barista Maestros will receive £14.75 per hour. Importantly, the pay increase applies to all hourly-paid employees in company-owned stores, noting that Costa Coffee does not implement age-based pay banding.

In addition to the pay rise, employees will have the opportunity to earn bonuses based on the performance of their store teams. Nick Orrin, the UK&I Managing Director of Costa Coffee, emphasized the pivotal role that Baristas and team members play in delivering exceptional coffee experiences. He stated that the pay uplift reflects the company’s dedication to recognizing and rewarding its workforce.

Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves expressed support for this initiative, pointing out its alignment with broader efforts to reward hard work in the workforce. She stated that the upcoming increase in the National Living Wage would also enhance the financial standing of many workers across the country, making it clear that rewarding hard work is essential.
