Julius Meinl, an Austrian coffee firm, has successfully sourced 100% ‘responsibly selected coffee’ for its roasting facilities in Vienna and Vicenza, marking a significant milestone in its sustainability journey. This achievement signifies extensive efforts and collaboration within the coffee value chain, ensuring that every green coffee bean roasted adheres to the sustainability criteria established in the Coffee Sustainability Reference Code (Coffee SR Code) by the Global Coffee Platform (GCP). The Coffee SR Code provides a framework for sustainable coffee production across three dimensions: economic, social, and environmental, supported by twelve principles.

Nicolas Charmillot, director of green coffee sourcing at Julius Meinl, emphasized that this milestone reflects the company’s commitment to fostering a positive impact within its supply chain, from the farms to the consumers’ cups. The firm utilizes the Global Coffee Platform’s Equivalence Mechanism to recognize sustainability initiatives and certifications such as Fairtrade as equivalent to the Coffee SR Code, simplifying processes and encouraging substantial improvements on farms.

To monitor and validate compliance with these standards, Julius Meinl partners with Enveritas, a non-profit organization that performs regular assessments of farms and supply chains, sharing insights with suppliers to identify improvements. Charmillot reassured consumers that every bean roasted in their facilities respects people, communities, and the environment.

Looking ahead, Julius Meinl aims to ensure that all externally produced Julius Meinl-branded coffee products will also be ‘responsibly selected’ by the end of 2028, continuing its collaboration with partners throughout the supply chain to achieve this objective. Founded in 1862 in Vienna, Julius Meinl remains one of the oldest active coffee roasters, supplying coffee and tea to over 50,000 hotels, coffee houses, restaurants, and retail outlets across 70 countries.
