Australians React To The Rising Cost Of Coffee – CoffeeTalk
An analysis of the rising costs of cafe coffee in Australia has revealed that buying a coffee means more to Australians than just the caffeine hit. Many still plan to buy takeaway coffee, but for most it is no longer a daily purchase. The cost-of-living crisis has made it difficult for some to justify their coffee consumption, as it is now considered a special treat.
Most have noticed an increase in takeaway coffee prices, ranging from 50c to $2. As a result, they have become pickier with how often they are buying out and are saving their cafe coffee for social situations, such as working in the office or catching up with friends. Coffee is a crucial part of Australian social life and culture, and many feel guilty drinking their coffee due to its high cost.
Cafe culture is not dead, as many Australians remain faithful to their local cafes. Many believe that their closest cafe is an important establishment in the community and will continue to buy coffee from cafes if prices keep rising. They point to the social aspect of cafes as a peaceful place where people can chat to people they might not normally interact with. Many Australians also stress the importance of supporting local cafes and are happy to pay more to do so.
Around half of the Australians who responded said they are making coffees at home more frequently. Many, such as Kiri, established a set-up during lockdown and haven’t gone back to buying coffee on a daily basis. Others have just established their home cafe, such as Danielle, who no longer buys coffee out. These set-ups range from French presses and moka pots to espresso machines with plenty of add-ons, which is “all quite normal for inner Melbourne.”
However, more than half of survey responders could not name a place that offers a decent yet affordable coffee, with some turning to convenience store cups or office coffee machines. Some would rather opt out entirely, as bad-tasting coffee isn’t worth it even if it’s cheap. For most, it’s either coffee or nothing, and when asked if they were seeking out alternative drink options, readers responded with a resounding no.
