Americans are increasingly drinking coffee, with approximately 66% consuming it daily in both 2024 and 2025, a rise from 62% in 2020. Despite this increase in consumption, Starbucks, the leading coffee chain with nearly 17,000 U.S. locations, is losing market share, dropping from 52% in 2023 to 48% in 2024 and 2025. Competitors, including Dunkin’, which recently opened its 10,000th store, as well as drive-thru chains like 7 Brew, Scooter’s Coffee, and Dutch Bros, are gaining ground. Additionally, emerging Chinese chains like Luckin Coffee and Blue Bottle have entered the market, intensifying competition for Starbucks.

Market analysts cite the oversaturation of coffee shops—over 34,500 chain coffee stores in the U.S., a 19% growth over six years—as a crucial factor in Starbucks’ struggle. Its large size is viewed as a disadvantage, making it challenging to find new growth opportunities. Starbucks is focusing on improving customer experience by enhancing store environments and adding 25,000 additional seats. Plans include the opening of over 575 new stores, introducing smaller-format locations, and diversifying the menu with new products.

However, Starbucks faces criticism for a lack of innovation compared to competitors. For example, Dutch Bros has successfully marketed energy drinks much earlier than Starbucks. The price point is also a factor; customers often perceive Starbucks’ offerings as overpriced, with the average spend at Starbucks being $9.34, significantly higher than the $4.68 average at Dunkin’ and $8.44 at Dutch Bros.

Starbucks executives emphasize their strategy revolves around maintaining their café experience rather than shifting to drive-thru models or mobile pickups. They believe in creating comfortable spaces that accommodate various customer needs, including those seeking convenience. Yet, experts suggest Starbucks must adapt to evolving consumer preferences or risk losing its established position in the market as the allure surrounding the brand diminishes.
