Xpresso Café, a South African coffee shop, has revolutionized the market by offering a variety of products at an affordable price. The idea to launch an affordable coffee shop began a decade ago when Nicolene and Tomer Elhadad realized that not everyone could afford the products they offered. They wanted to make the experience more affordable and took around two years to find a suitable business model.

The couple’s vision was to offer a family of five people an experience where everyone could buy two things for R10. They argued about the price, with her husband insisting that every item on the menu cost R10, but they did not know if that would be sustainable. After the first Xpresso Café store opened in Durbanville in Cape Town in 2016, they worked hard to spread the word about the new coffee shop offering everything on the menu for R10.

The first Xpresso Café store was a hit, and the word spread rapidly. The couple asked rental agents to find them a good location in Durbanville, Cape Town, because they lived close to it, making it easier to run the business. They did not do any advertising or promotions, giving the team time to learn how to do everything.

People who walked into the Xpresso Café were surprised that everything only cost R10. The word spread rapidly, with the new coffee shop featured in the press, on radio, and on television. People were also contacting the Elhadads through the community who spread the word about the unique new coffee shop selling all products at R10.

From the one store in Durbanville in 2015, Xpresso Café has grown to 65 outlets selling 50,000 cups of coffee a day. It maintained its special R10 price for five years, then increased it to R12 in October 2021 and to R14 in October 2024.

Nicolene and Tomer Elhadad believe that giving is better than receiving and that offering customers flavorful coffee, delicious pastries, appetizing sandwiches, and decadent treats is a dream come true.
