The coffee industry in the UAE is experiencing significant challenges due to logistics disruptions caused by geopolitical tensions, specifically related to the Iran war. This has resulted in rising freight and insurance costs, along with delays in cargo arrivals that threaten the consistent flavor profiles expected by consumers. Ivan Kroshnyi, co-founder of Roasters Specialty Coffee House, emphasizes the importance of preserving the quality of coffee despite these disruptions, stating that maintaining flavor consistency is vital for customer trust.

The UAE’s coffee market, valued at approximately $332 million in 2024, is poised for growth, with a projected annual increase of 8.4% until 2029. Historically, the region has a rich coffee culture dating back to the 13th century, but today it heavily relies on imports from Latin America, Africa, and Asia. At coffee establishments like Cypher Urban Roastery, co-founder Mohamad Merhi notes significant operational adjustments due to longer transit times and increased logistics costs, which have substantially escalated from around Dh12,000–15,000 to about Dh70,000 per container for coffee shipments.

Speciality coffee operators face unique challenges, as even minor disruptions can drastically impact the delicate flavor profiles of high-quality beans. To mitigate these issues, companies like Roasters have opted for air freight to preserve freshness and quality, absorbing the increased operational costs internally. Sasa Sestic of Ona exemplifies innovative solutions, including freezing coffee at specific aging points to maintain flavor integrity.

Despite these hurdles, some operators highlight the advantages of the UAE’s developed logistics infrastructure, which has enabled sustained supply chain efficacy. Allan Jones of Coffee Planet asserts that diversified sourcing and long-term planning have helped mitigate the impact of supply chain disruptions, allowing them to maintain product stability and avoid noticeable changes in taste for most customers. The industry’s ability to manage complexities behind the scenes ensures that consumers remain largely unaware of the logistical battles fought to deliver their daily coffee.
