The coffee varieties currently cultivated were developed prior to the emergence of challenges such as climate change and diseases, notably leaf rust, that pose threats to coffee production. In response to these pressing issues, World Coffee Research (WCR), a nonprofit organization, established the Innovea Global Coffee Breeding Network in 2022. This initiative aims to unite companies and government-affiliated research institutions to create new coffee varieties that can withstand these challenges. In 2023, breeding trials commenced in nine countries, including Costa Rica and Rwanda. According to Vern Long, CEO of WCR, while farmers may need to wait until 2037 before these new, more resilient coffee varieties become available, this timeline represents the fastest progress achievable to date. Long emphasizes the significance of collaboration, stating, “We’re creating the best genetics by working together at scale.”
