Join a large group of coffee leaders to discuss the valuable role women play in coffee and how we can better measure their contributions
On Sunday, April 14 at 9 am central time, leaders from across the coffee industry will gather at the SCA Expo McCormick Place in room S401D to discuss the role of gender and data in equitable value distribution. Organizers, Amaris Gutierrez-Ray, Joe Coffee, and Roberta Lauretti-Bernhard, Food Enterprise Solutions, have selected a panel which includes representatives from two non-profits, a private roaster and manufacturer and a research institution:
• Grayson Caldwell, Director Sustainability & Impact, Bellwether, based in Brooklyn, NY
• Kyle Engelman, Executive Director, Grounds for Health, based in Boston, MA
• Teopista Nakkungu, Regional Chapter Manager Africa, IWCA, based in Uganda
• Sylvia Calfat, Committee on Sustainability Assessment (COSA), based in Colombia
The panel will be introduced by Blanca Castro, Executive Director, International Women’s Coffee Alliance (IWCA), and moderated by Ruth Ann Church, President, Artisan Coffee Imports. Panelists will begin by celebrating examples of how participation of women has improved all along the coffee value chain in the past two decades and then advance into a discussion of measurement. As more coffee professionals pay attention to gender in coffee, scarce research exists that is recent and reliable. Most publicly available data sets are 15+ years old or poorly research. This slows progress and presents challenges in describing the problems, impacts, and solutions. There are many applications for strong gender data, most of which would advance the coffee industry’s goals for equitable value distribution. This important and timely panel will discuss research that could help unlock funding and grants that benefit women smallholder farmers and accelerate progress on sustainability and ESG goals.
