Birch Bark Coffee Company (Birch Bark), a First Nations-owned and operated Canadian company is expanding into Costco this fall. It will be the first Indigenous coffee brand to be offered in the mass market chain, providing consumers with an opportunity to purchase packaged coffee beans that taste great and are ethically sourced.

Dedicated to Blending Tradition and Sustainability
Birch Bark provides exceptional tasting, ethically sourced coffee that makes a difference. The company is committed to uplifting Indigenous communities by addressing systemic and intergenerational challenges through sustainable business practices, development, and education. Every pound of coffee sold contributes to the company’s efforts to bring clean drinking water to Indigenous homes suffering from water advisories.

This innovative coffee company was founded in 2018 by Mark Marsolais-Nahwegahbow, a Band member of Whitefish River First Nation located on Birch Island, Ontario. Mark is on a mission to make a difference in the lives of Indigenous people across Canada. “I believe that coffee has the power to unite and act as a force of change. I created Birch Bark to uplift Indigenous communities by promoting sustainable business practices, supporting development and education, and raising awareness of critical issues,” says Mark Marsolais-Nahwegahbow. “Through every cup of coffee, we strive to empower and honour our communities, fostering resilience and unity against all forms of injustice.”

Coffee Making A Difference
Birch Bark has partnered with Reunion Coffee Roasters (Reunion), a Canadian specialty coffee roaster known for its exceptional-tasting coffee that is sustainably sourced and roasted. Through this partnership, Birch Bark coffee will be exclusively produced at Reunion’s Bullfrog-powered roaster in Oakville, ON. This partnership allows Birch Bark to increase its production while continuing to offer organic, Fairtrade Canada-certified coffee that meets the highest standard of ethical and sustainable sourcing and production.

“Birch Bark Coffee Company and Reunion Coffee Roasters share many core values,” says Adam Pesce, President, and CEO of Reunion. “We believe in the power of coffee to create meaningful change and share a deep respect for every step of the process, from sourcing through to the partners we work with. We are thrilled at the opportunity to be a part of the Birch Bark story and support their incredible vision,” he adds.

Birch Bark Coffee can be found in specialty grocery stores and is proudly launching in select Costco locations nationwide this fall. Their collection of Fairtrade and organic coffee includes espresso, medium-dark, dark, and decaffeinated roasts in 12oz and 2lb formats.

“We look forward to the opportunity to expand our presence with new listings and, in turn, deepen our work in uplifting Indigenous communities,” says Mark Marsolais-Nahwegahbow.
