Texas A&M Brewing Up Nation’s First Academic Coffee Certificate Program

Texas A&M University has announced that it will begin offering an academic coffee certificate for the first time in the U.S. The program aims to prepare students to work in the rapidly expanding coffee industry. Director of the Extrusion Technology Program and associate head of the Department of Food Science and Technology at Texas A&M, Mian Riaz, explained that the program teaches students how to process different snack foods, pet food, and other types of processing technology.

The program was initiated by the Texas A&M Center for Coffee Research and Education, which has been helping coffee growers improve their quality in the field. However, the university realized that students also need to learn how to process different coffee and develop different flavors. Therefore, the Department of Food Science has created a program that offers a certificate, where students take classes and become experts in coffee.

There are no prerequisites for this program, as long as students are a student of Texas A&M University. There are requirements for 4 or 5 courses, totaling 15 credit hours. Most full-time students take most of the courses, so if they take all the courses, they will receive a certificate that can help them find better job opportunities.

The coursework involved in getting the certificate includes sensory evaluation, coffee processing, food safety, health benefits, and different flavors. Students take these courses in sequence to get a coffee certificate.

Once certified, students are qualified to brew the perfect cup of coffee, which is equivalent to any degree. This certificate is an additional credential, allowing students to apply for jobs in the coffee industry and other food industries.
