Specialty Roaster Onyx Coffee Lab Secures Highest Living Wage for Us Certification

Onyx Coffee Lab, a company in Arkansas, has been awarded by nonprofit organization Living Wage for Us for its efforts in providing equitable pay for staff. The organization determines if wages paid by a company align or exceed minimum financial requirements for a worker to live a financially secure and dignified life. Onyx Coffee Lab is the first company in the Natural State to be awarded by Living Wage for Us, which works with the Economic Policy Institute to recalculate wages annually based on changes in cost of living. The methodology behind these calculations is reviewed by various stakeholders, including labor representatives, employers, and civil society actors.

Onyx Coffee Lab’s Plus designation indicates that beyond providing a living wage, the company offers additional benefits to employees that could not be calculated toward living wage payment. This shows that a living wage should be a floor, not a ceiling when paying workers. Onyx Coffee Lab has worked with Living Wage for Us for over a year and currently has four cafes stationed in Northwest Arkansas and one restaurant.
