Scientists Raise Alarm Over Microplastics Released From Single-Use Cups, Particularly In Hot Beverages – CoffeeTalk
Scientists have discovered that single-use beverage containers are releasing thousands of microplastics into our drinks, particularly hot drinks served in plastic-lined disposable drinkware. These microplastics have been linked to various health issues, with researchers at the University of New Mexico (UNM) finding them in concentrations of 4,800 micrograms per gram in human brain tissue. Microplastics are now accumulating in human tissue and have been linked to dementia.
To make a long-lasting difference, more effort is required. Health issues related to microplastics and PFAS will not disappear on their own, and the health burden will only be exacerbated unless legislative change is implemented. More educational efforts are needed so the public can better understand the health risks associated with these contaminants.
Scientists are attempting to develop ways to filter microplastics out of the human body. More brands are trying to develop plastic-free packaging, and many coffee shops offer discounts for bringing your own cup or offering porcelain mugs for dine-in drinks. However, more effort is required to make a lasting difference. “Health issues related to microplastics and PFAS will not disappear on their own, and the health burden will only be exacerbated unless we work toward implementing legislative change,” said Claudia Pratesi, Ph.D., an assistant professor at the University of New Mexico College of Population Health.
More educational efforts are needed to help the public understand the health risks associated with microplastics and PFAS, as well as to phasing out plastic in our daily lives.
