Regenerative Agriculture is Reshaping Coffee Procurement, Says Nestlé – CoffeeTalk

Nestlé is transforming its coffee supply chain through the implementation of regenerative agriculture practices, with the goal of reviving degraded soils, improving farm resilience, increasing yields, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Pascal Chapot, the Head of Agriculture at Nestlé, emphasizes that the health of the soil directly influences crop quality and continuity of supply. The degradation of soils, particularly in major coffee-growing regions, threatens not only farmer livelihoods but also the quality of coffee delivered to consumers. Current trends predict that by 2050, 90% of the world’s soils will face degradation, affecting approximately 3.2 billion people.

As part of the Nescafé Plan, Nestlé collaborates with farmers in countries like Vietnam, the second-largest coffee producer, to adopt regenerative practices such as intercropping, which supports biodiversity and offers additional income. Through training programs, Nestlé has educated over 100,000 farmers in regenerative methods by 2025, covering more than 400,000 hectares of coffee farms globally. By 2025, 53% of the green coffee sourced by Nestlé already comes from farms utilizing these practices—exceeding the company’s 2030 target of 50%.

The benefits of regenerative agriculture are evident in increased crop yields and overall improvement in farmer incomes due to enhanced productivity, better cost management, and diversification of crops. Nestlé has reported an 18.3% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from coffee produced under the Nescafé Plan since 2018. Chapot asserts that a supply chain reliant on degraded soil is doomed to fail, while productive, healthy farms contribute positively to Nestlé’s business strategy. The company is committed to marrying economic viability with environmental sustainability, ensuring that farming practices foster soil vitality as a foundation for the future of the coffee supply chain.
