The New Zealand Specialty Coffee Association (NZSCA) has announced the launch of its new regional competition format for 2026 – The Barista Open.

Designed to lower the barrier to entry and encourage new and emerging competitors to give competitions a go, the new format is positioned as a fast-paced, head-to-head knockout competition. Two baristas compete at a time in a match that includes a one-minute introduction, a three-minute dial-in and setup, a five-minute beverage round of serving espresso, dairy milk, and alternative milk, and a one-minute clean down.

The winning position in this competition is only open to competitors who have not placed in the top three of the National Barista Championships within the past five years, although experienced competitors are also welcome to compete and be part of the event.

Winners receive paid entry into the New Zealand Barista Championships along with support from the NZSCA in their preparations.

This new format is only for regionals, with Nationals to run as they historically have and strictly adhere to the World Coffee Events rules and standards.
