NCA Report Shows Consumer Interest In Home Brewing Has Seen Increased Interest Since 2020 – CoffeeTalk
According to a study by the National Coffee Association, there has been a notable increase in the number of Americans purchasing coffee makers for home brewing, despite the rise in coffee shop availability. The trend has gained momentum since 2020, with ownership of various coffee maker styles on the rise. Countertop espresso machines have seen a remarkable growth of 50%, while manual pour-over filter brewers have experienced a 20% increase in ownership. Chi Sum Ngai, co-founder of Coffee Project, highlights that consumers are eager to own multiple types of brewers, particularly manual ones such as pour-over and moka pots, in order to experiment with different coffee varieties.
The growing interest in home brewing aligns with a greater focus on aficionado-level coffee preparation, as evidenced by frequent inquiries Ms. Ngai receives regarding brewing recipes and recommendations for coffee equipment suitable for enthusiasts. Additionally, sales of mineral extracts to enhance water flavor profiles have also risen, indicating a deeper personalization of home coffee experiences.
Jane Abrahams, a professional organizer, attributes this surge in coffee equipment purchases to the post-pandemic shift towards home cooking. She notes that there is a rising demand for dedicated coffee stations in people’s homes, designed to accommodate various coffee makers, from convenient Keurigs to high-end Jura machines, although the French press has seen a decline in popularity.
While working from home might partially explain this trend, Ms. Ngai emphasizes a broader enthusiasm for the craft of coffee making as a primary driver. The data from the National Coffee Association underscores this shift, revealing increases in home coffee maker ownership across nearly all categories since 2020, with a detailed chart illustrating the specific changes in ownership percentages among different types of coffee makers.
