The ports of Antwerp and Ghent are crucial in distributing Brazil’s key coffee exports across Europe. Antwerp-Bruges, home to the world’s largest coffee storage facility, plays a central role in the coffee trade, importing 500,000 tonnes annually, equivalent to 45 billion cups of coffee. Brazil is the world’s largest coffee producer, and 40% of its food exports to Belgium consist of coffee beans. These are distributed from Antwerp to Belgian coffee roasters and across the European market. Ghent also plays a strategic role in the orange juice trade, with Louis Dreyfus Company and Brazilian Citrosuco having terminals in the port. The produce is distributed to producers throughout Europe, with almost all fruit juice consumed in Europe coming from Ghent. Belgium serves as a hub for Brazilian exports, but also exports food products to Brazil, with French fries being the most significant item sent overseas.
