Conservation International’s New AROMA Sustainable Coffee Program To Receive Support From Green Climate Fund – CoffeeTalk

Conservation International and the Green Climate Fund (GCF) have approved a Project Preparation Facility (PPF) grant to support the Alternative Response Options for Mitigation & Adaptation of Coffee Farms (AROMA) GCF Program. The program, estimated to cost around $120 million, will be implemented over seven years to address structural changes in the coffee sector. The program will work with smallholder coffee farmers in Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and Uganda, which represent nearly 20% of the world’s coffee smallholders and account for about 11% of all coffee production and 16% of land used for coffee cultivation.

The AROMA program will focus on boosting the resilience of coffee communities while mitigating the risk of expanding coffee’s carbon footprint. By implementing more regenerative agriculture techniques and agroforestry-focused production systems, using diverse, climate-resistant crop varieties, and building resilience of farming families, the program aims to ensure a future supply of high-quality coffee for people worldwide.

Current Director of Sustainable Coffee at Conservation International, Raina Lang, emphasizes the importance of supporting climate adaptation for coffee growers. AROMA will accelerate this transformation by leveraging Conservation International’s leadership in convening the Sustainable Coffee Challenge, a global coalition of over 120 partners united in a collective vision to make coffee the world’s first sustainable agricultural product. By catalyzing place-based investments for governments and industry partners, AROMA will be one of multiple innovative mechanisms to deliver on the Challenge’s goal of transforming coffee for the benefit of people and planet.
