Coffee Giants Unite for Global Farmer Prosperity & Sustainable Sourcing – CoffeeTalk
The Global Coffee Platform, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), IDH, and Solidaridad have announced a collaborative effort to develop the “Coffee Sector Guidance for Responsible Procurement.” This initiative aims to unite various stakeholders across the coffee value chain to establish a framework encouraging responsible procurement practices that enhance farmer prosperity and bolster supply chain resilience. Eighteen leading companies have pledged their commitment to this initiative, emphasizing their dedication and expertise in the sector.
Facilitated by the Sustainable Food Lab (SFL), the collaboration builds upon previous initiatives by the four organizations. GIZ has partnered with German retailers through the Sustainable Agricultural Supply Chains Initiative (SASI), backed by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). In contrast, GCP, IDH, and Solidaridad have worked with roasters and traders to formulate the Coffee Common Procurement Principles. By joining efforts, the organizations seek to establish a unified vision and framework for procurement practices across the coffee industry.
Central to this initiative is the acknowledgment that the sustainability of the coffee industry hinges on the welfare of millions of smallholder farmers and workers. Despite the substantial financial flows within the global coffee supply chains, many producers receive incomes below the established living income threshold. Simultaneously, factors like climate change, market volatility, ascending production costs, and limited financial access exert significant stress on farming communities, jeopardizing their livelihoods and the enduring viability of coffee production.
The partners underscore the importance of not only improving production practices but also recognizing the significant influence of purchasing methods on farmers’ livelihoods, investment potential, and long-term resilience. They advocate for collaborative efforts across the entire value chain—from producers and exporters to traders, roasters, and retailers—to drive meaningful change in procurement practices.
The forthcoming Coffee Sector Guidance will serve as a practical reference point for companies looking to enhance their purchasing practices and align commercial decisions with sustainability goals. It will encompass all aspects of coffee sourcing, leveraging the foundational Common Procurement Principles (CPP) and adapting relevant procurement frameworks, including the Ethical Trading Initiative’s guidelines for Responsible Purchasing Practices in Food. This structured approach will operationalize the CPPs within the coffee sector, providing clarity and actionable guidance for implementation and ongoing enhancement.
Throughout the development of the Guidance, input from producers, exporters, traders, roasters, retailers, and civil society will be imperative. Their contributions will enrich the process with expertise and practical insights, ensuring that the final Guidance is relevant, broadly applicable, and reflective of the realities faced throughout the coffee value chain. This collaborative endeavor is crucial for fostering a sustainable future for coffee and the communities involved in its production.
