Editor’s note: The effects of CBD are still being studied. You should discuss using it with your doctor if you have any health concerns.
I live in Los Angeles, where marijuana in all its forms is a common part of everyday life. However, amidst work and other responsibilities, the psychoactive effect that THC brings isn’t always ideal — which is where CBD comes into play.
CBD, or cannabidiol, is a naturally occurring compound found in the cannabis plant. Unlike THC, the other compound found in cannabis, CBD is non-intoxicating—meaning it doesn’t cause the “high” associated with marijuana. CBD has several known therapeutic benefits, which is why it has gained significant attention in recent years.
Over the last decade, CBD-infused beverages—like CBD kombucha or CBD sparkling water—have become all the rage, and it only makes sense that CBD coffee would find its way onto the list. What makes CBD coffee so alluring is that it fuses the energizing component of caffeine with the calming effects of CBD. In this article, we’ll explore CBD coffee more in-depth and delve into the potential benefits it has to offer.
Benefits of CBD
Pain Management
One of the most well-known potential benefits of CBD is its ability to alleviate pain. CBD interacts with receptors in the endocannabinoid system, which is involved in regulating pain perception. Studies have suggested that CBD may help reduce chronic pain caused by conditions such as arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and fibromyalgia. Additionally, CBD has been explored for its potential to reduce inflammation, which can contribute to pain. By modulating the body’s inflammatory response, CBD may offer a natural alternative for individuals seeking pain relief.
Stress Relief
CBD has gained attention for its potential as an anxiolytic, meaning it may help reduce anxiety and stress levels. Research has shown that CBD interacts with receptors in the brain associated with mood and stress responses, such as serotonin receptors. Several studies have indicated that CBD may help reduce symptoms of anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder (SAD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It may also promote a sense of calmness and relaxation without the intoxicating effects typically associated with cannabis.
Potential Neuroprotective Effects
Another area of interest is CBD’s potential neuroprotective properties. Some studies suggest that CBD may help protect the brain and nervous system from damage and degeneration. While the exact mechanisms are still being studied, CBD’s anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties are believed to play a role in supporting brain health. It is important to note that more research is needed to determine the full extent of CBD’s neuroprotective effects and its practical application in treating these conditions.
Trying CBD Coffee
When learning about CBD coffee, I had to try it for myself—and for my experiment, I brewed Buddha Beans Ethiopian coffee. Buddha Beans’ coffee is roasted in small batches and infused with 100% organic non-GMO, USA-grown hemp. I tried their coffee as both a cold brew and a pourover, and was really pleased with how smooth, clean, and balanced the cup tasted.
In the Ethiopian coffee were notes of caramel, green tea, jasmine, and lemon, with a delicate body and light mouthfeel. The infusion of CBD did make a difference in the overall experience, helping alleviate any of the “jitters” that coffee can sometimes bring and creating a general feeling of relaxation and harmony.
Overall, drinking Buddha Beans’ CBD coffee was akin to drinking tea—I still had the enlivening effects from the caffeine but in a slower and more balanced way. If you’re sensitive to caffeine or simply want to add a little more calm and ease to your daily life, CBD coffee may be for you.
