Brazilian coffee producers in Cerrado Mineiro, a region known for Arabica beans, are testing Conilon varieties due to climate change and other concerns. Arabica coffee, which requires cooler temperatures to grow than Canephora beans, is particularly susceptible to climate change. Canephora, also known as Robusta, includes Conilon coffees. The adoption of Conilon beans would mark a significant shift for the region, where 100% of Brazil’s coffee production is Arabica. Record Robusta prices have led to an expansion of the coffee crop across Brazil, into areas traditionally associated with Arabica. However, concerns around climate change will also influence the choice between Arabica and Conilon coffees, as Conilon is a more resistant and less susceptible to these changes.
