Australian café named best coffee shop in the world
Toby’s Estate in Chippendale, Sydney, has claimed the top spot on the inaugural World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops list, with three Australian cafés in the top 10 and a total of nine Australian cafés making the list.
Jody Leslie, General Manager for Toby’s Estate, says the roastery is thrilled with the accolade.
“At Toby’s Estate, coffee is at the heart of everything we do, and I think that’s reflected in our customer’s experience. Our whole team puts in an immense amount of effort to make the best coffee possible, so we’re absolutely delighted to be awarded this incredible recognition,” she says.
Two other Australian cafés made the top 10, with Proud Mary Coffee in Melbourne placing 4th, and multi-roastery Coffee Anthology in Brisbane placing 8th.
The World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops is a new global recognition system for which coffee shops are judged on the criteria of quality of coffee, barista experience, customer service, innovation, ambience and atmosphere, sustainability practices, food and pastry quality, and consistency.
The competition voting system consists of two main components: public voting and expert evaluations. Coffee lovers from across the globe were invited to cast their votes online while a panel of specialty coffee experts, including renowned baristas, coffee roasters, and industry professionals, provided their assessments of the coffee shops.
The final scores were determined using a weighted system in which public votes accounted for 30 per cent of the final score, while expert evaluations contributed the remaining 70 per cent.
