Bodum USA Issues Voluntary Recall for Nearly 6 Million Coffee Makers – CoffeeTalk
Bodum USA has issued a voluntary recall of nearly six million coffee makers due to reported burn injuries, as announced by federal regulators. The recall affects 8-cup and 12-cup French press coffee makers with replaceable glass carafes, according to a notice from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The agency highlighted that the glass carafe may unexpectedly break if damaged or cracked during use, particularly if a metal spoon is used for stirring, leading to serious burn risks.
The recall encompasses more than half a dozen models, including Bistro, Brazil, Caffettiera, Chambord, Crema, Java, Jesper, and Kenya, and affects products distributed from 1974 through October 2026. These coffee makers were widely available through various retailers, including Amazon, Target, and Walmart, with prices ranging from $15 to $65.
To mitigate risks, the CPSC advises against using metal utensils for stirring coffee in the carafe. Bodum is offering customers a free plastic stirring spoon and a warning label to remind them to avoid using cracked carafes and metal utensils that could damage the glass.
According to the CPSC notice, Bodum had received notifications of 70 incidents regarding carafe breakage during use, with 48 reports of burns to consumers. In a press release, the company affirmed its commitment to addressing injury reports seriously and underscored that the recall aims to enhance the safe use of its French press products. Bodum claimed that instances of carafe breakage have been minimal despite the high volume of product sales in the U.S. over the decades.
Moving forward, all new models will come equipped with a plastic stirring spoon and an updated warning label. Bodum emphasized its leadership in the North American market and its dedication to reinforcing safety instructions and warnings. The company reassured customers of its historical commitment to product safety, stating, “trust is the bedrock of our company,” which it aims to uphold with every product manufactured.
After announcing the voluntary recall, Bodum issued the following statement:
“As a family-owned business, Bodum takes particular pride in making household products – including coffee and tea makers – that are both high quality and affordable, and we have used that formula to benefit millions of families worldwide for the past 72 years. To maintain the trust and satisfaction of our customers, we pride ourselves in using high-quality materials and ensuring our products meet or exceed all relevant safety standards.
Given the emphasis we put on product safety, we take any reports of injury extremely seriously. That is why we are we are announcing a voluntary recall of certain Bodum 8- and 12- Cup French Press Coffee Makers with replaceable glass carafes in cooperation with the CPSC. This recall is an opportunity to reinforce warnings against using a cracked or damaged carafe and in particular, against using metal spoons to stir coffee in the glass carafe, which can damage the glass and lead to breakage during use. While the rate of reported incidents involving carafe breakage during use is extremely low, especially considering that Bodum has sold millions of these products in the U.S. for decades, this recall will further encourage the safe use of our French Press Coffee Makers.
We will be providing affected consumers in the U.S. with a free Bodum-designed plastic stirring spoon and an additional warning label reminding them not to use metal utensils in the glass carafes. Going forward, these products will be sold with the plastic stirring spoon and an additional warning label. As the North American market leader in this product category, Bodum is taking these additional actions to reinforce our instructions and warnings about the safe use of the product.
For nearly three quarters of a century, our company has worked diligently to create products that prioritize safety for the millions of customers who have come to rely on us. That trust is the bedrock of our company, and we will continue to earn it with every Bodum item we make.”
