Verve Coffee Workers Reach Tentative Union Contract That Includes Guaranteed Hours, Protection Against AI Misuse and More – CoffeeTalk

Workers at Verve Coffee Roasters in the Bay Area have reached a tentative agreement with the company after nearly 10 months of negotiations, marking a significant achievement for employees in the specialty coffee sector. The agreement is subject to ratification by the workers in October 2025. Initially expressing their intention to unionize in September 2025, workers sought improved pay, consistent hours, and greater representation within the company. Their campaign gained support as three additional cafés joined the union effort, bringing the total to six locations employing approximately 60 workers, all represented by United Food and Commercial Workers Local 5.

The agreement includes several notable provisions aimed at enhancing worker protections. Full-time workers are guaranteed hours, and the company commits to offering internal job openings to current employees before considering external candidates. Schedules must be posted at least 14 days in advance, with provisions allowing workers to refuse changes to their hours made within a week. A wage progression system linked to the local minimum wage is also established, with bonuses of $250 for part-time and $500 for full-time employees once the contract is ratified.

For sick leave, workers will receive an additional $5 per hour to their base pay to compensate for lost tips, addressing a significant issue where employees forgo sick days to avoid income loss. The contract further stipulates that artificial intelligence (AI) cannot be used to make decisions about employees, respecting human oversight in company operations.

The bargaining process highlighted concerns from workers over AI’s impact on employment decisions and the importance of personal narratives in addressing workplace issues, leading to the inclusion of a $50 reimbursement for parking for downtown Santa Cruz workers. The vote on the contract is scheduled for October 9, and if ratified, the new protections will take immediate effect, with financial changes following shortly thereafter.

This agreement is seen as a victory not only for Verve workers but also as a potential catalyst for other workers within the specialty coffee industry and beyond, encouraging others to pursue unionization for better working conditions amidst rising living costs and industry competition.
