Starbucks Announces Planned Global Tech Center in India – CoffeeTalk
Starbucks has announced plans to establish a global capability center (GCC) in Chennai, India, which is expected to employ approximately 800 technology professionals, according to the Tamil Nadu state government. While the specific investment amount remains undisclosed, this expansion is seen as part of a broader trend, as just days prior, Walgreens also secured a deal to set up a GCC in Tamil Nadu, reinforcing the region’s significance in the technology sector. Chennai is currently home to GCCs from major global companies such as Citi, Barclays, and American Express, contributing to about 10% of India’s total GCC base.
The city’s appeal lies in its availability of a skilled workforce, low employee attrition rates, and robust infrastructure, which were highlighted by Starbucks’ technology head, Anand Varadarajan. The development aligns with a phenomena noted by industry reports, establishing India as the largest GCC hub in the world, featuring over 2,100 centers that collectively employ approximately 2.36 million people and generate nearly $100 billion in revenue, as noted in a report by Nasscom-Zinnov published in 2026.
Traditionally, GCCs offered low-cost back-office support; however, they have evolved to provide more complex and high-value services, including finance, software development, and research and development, reflecting a shift in corporate strategies towards leveraging these centers for comprehensive support to headquarters. Starbucks’ entry into this market marks a significant strategic step for the company in enhancing its technological capabilities within the rapidly developing Indian landscape.
