Four Philz Coffee Locations Announce Decision to File to Form Union – CoffeeTalk
Workers at four Philz Coffee locations in California—San Francisco, Glendale, Torrance, and Cupertino—have announced their decision to file for union formation. This initiative follows a precedent set by Philz Coffee workers in Berkeley, who had previously established Philz Coffee United in collaboration with UFCW Local 5 and are now in negotiations for their initial union contract. The recent unionization efforts are reportedly influenced by heightened employee concerns stemming from Philz Coffee’s change in ownership to a private equity firm in 2025, which allegedly led to increased unrest following the controversial directive from management earlier this summer to remove all Pride flags from stores. Although the company faced substantial public criticism, prompting a reversal of this decision, the policy still barred new locations from displaying Pride symbols. The employees from the four locations are now seeking to negotiate important workplace issues such as wages, benefits, scheduling, and overall working conditions as the initial step towards establishing their union.
