Kaxfree, a brand from Suzhou, Jiangsu province, is revolutionizing how coffee is made with an AI-driven coffee machine that goes beyond traditional brewing methods. Unlike conventional machines, this “AI barista” can interpret vague user requests—such as a preference for a milder drink—by leveraging two advanced cognitive systems. Alibaba’s Qwen large language model facilitates natural language processing, allowing the machine to understand and contextualize user inputs, while Kaxfree’s proprietary coffee model translates these insights into specific brewing parameters, including grind size, temperature, and milk ratio.

Historically, European brands dominated the premium coffee market, but Kaxfree is positioning itself as a contender by integrating AI technology that enhances user experience without compromising on coffee quality. Yang Jiasheng, the e-commerce director, emphasizes that understanding consumer preferences and providing consistent quality is essential, drawing from Kalerm’s 16 years of expertise in various coffee-related technologies.

The advanced technology isn’t limited to Kaxfree; competitors like Casarte and Mova are also bringing innovative machines to market. Casarte’s AI dual-extraction machine utilizes optical character recognition to analyze coffee bean origins, while Mova’s six-axis robotic system can prepare numerous drinks quickly to meet high demand.

However, the market faces challenges, notably a gap in consumer awareness about AI capabilities. Guo Meide from AVC highlights a tendency for some AI appliances to introduce features that fail to address real user needs. To tackle this, coffee engineer Xing Kuan focuses on customizing brews based on user feedback, employing his sensory expertise to adjust machine parameters for different types of coffee beans.

Notable in this transformation is the rise of Chinese specialty coffee, such as those from Yunnan province, which have gained recognition for their unique flavor profiles. Xing advocates for using local beans in high-quality machines, showcasing a new chapter for Chinese manufacturing that combines local agricultural products and cutting-edge technology to create an exceptional coffee experience. This convergence of advancements positions Kaxfree not just as a coffee machine manufacturer, but as part of a broader narrative of innovation in China’s coffee industry.
