Throughout 2026, the coffee market narrative has shifted significantly towards expectations of increased supplies, with Brazil projected to harvest a record 71.9 million bags, alongside rising exports from Vietnam. Despite this optimistic outlook, concerns are emerging regarding the quality of coffee due to climate pressures. The prevailing question is not just the quantity of coffee available, but the quality that enters the export pipeline, particularly as climate change alters the balance between arabica and robusta production.
Brazil’s major crop will consist of 47.5 million bags of arabica and 24.4 million bags of robusta (conilon). While production is recovering from previous weather challenges, excessive rainfall during the harvest season has raised concerns about bean quality, affecting premium-grade coffee availability. Roasters have specific requirements for cup profiles, screen sizes, and quality grades, thus creating competition for high-quality washed arabicas even amidst a robust overall supply.
A notable shift is occurring in the coffee landscape: the global expansion of robusta coffee. Once primarily associated with lower-quality products, robusta is now gaining prominence due to its lower production costs and climate resilience. Countries like Indonesia, India, and Uganda are experiencing significant changes in their production profiles, with robusta becoming a dominant crop. For instance, Indonesia’s upcoming crop is expected to be 88% robusta, while in India, robusta production is now nearly three times that of arabica.
Brazil also plays a crucial role in this robusta transformation, with a notable increase in conilon production driven by improved practices in Espírito Santo and Rondônia. This development allows Brazil to diversify its offerings beyond arabica, thereby introducing a competitive source of robusta supply in the global market.
Central America, traditionally known for high-quality arabica production, is grappling with the implications of climate change. Nicaragua is emerging as an example of robusta adaptation, with growing interest in its cultivation as a potential climate-resilient alternative. This region’s explorations signify a major shift, as robusta could present viable solutions in areas where arabica production is becoming increasingly untenable.
Overall, the coffee industry is poised to navigate a dual reality: an expanding robusta supply dominated by nations like Brazil, Vietnam, Uganda, and Indonesia, contrasted with a premium arabica market facing ongoing quality challenges and climate volatility.
