A new study has contradicted the prevailing belief that robusta coffee is more resilient to climate change than other coffee varieties, with the lead author Aaron Davis labeling it an “internet myth” stemming from flawed research that neglected to consider the crop’s drought intolerance and other weaknesses. Each year, tens of millions of bags of robusta, often viewed as inferior to arabica beans, are produced worldwide, primarily from Vietnam and Brazil.
The findings were published in the Wiley journal Sustainable Development, posing challenges for advocates promoting robusta as a solution to climate change within the coffee industry. With increasing global demand for robusta, these reassessments hold implications for farmers, traders, and consumers alike. A Vietnamese coffee official emphasized the urgent necessity of adapting to climate change to protect output.
Historically, media, farmers, and researchers have highlighted robusta’s heat resilience as a potential answer to climate challenges. However, the new study argues that earlier evaluations should only be seen as tentative, citing research errors like considering irrigated farms as optimal growing environments. While robusta is indeed more heat-tolerant than arabica, it suffers from drought intolerance, risking its viability.
The research indicates that major coffee-producing countries such as Brazil, Vietnam, and India may lack the appropriate climate conditions necessary for robusta cultivation. The study emphasizes the reliance on irrigation to provide sufficient water for crop profitability, highlighting the inherent risks associated with such dependency. Previous studies promoting robusta’s resilience often overlooked these vulnerabilities.
The study concludes that any expansion of robusta production must acknowledge these challenges, as some regions are already grappling with insufficient water supplies for irrigation. Davis insists that substantial structural and systemic changes are required in the global coffee supply chain to ensure its long-term sustainability.
