Aarhus University's Reverse Vending Machine Pilot Project to Encourage Reusable Coffee Cup Use – CoffeeTalk

Aarhus University is part of a pioneering initiative focused on reducing single-use packaging through a system of REUSEABLE cups, introduced in January 2024. Instead of disposable cups, customers pay a small fee for reusable polypropylene cups branded “REUSEABLE,” available for both hot and cold beverages. Students and residents can return these cups at over 27 reverse vending machines (RVMs) around the city for a refund of 5 Danish kronor, contributing to a city-wide effort to curb plastic waste.

Single-use cups represent a significant waste issue in Denmark, with approximately 820,000 discarded daily. REUSEABLE aims to address this challenge, modeled on successful initiatives in other cities but distinguishing itself with accessible collection points for easy returns. The initiative reported an impressive return rate of nearly 90% for the cups in 2025, bolstered by strong environmental awareness, particularly among younger demographics.

With support from local cafes and organizations like the Compass Group, which caters eateries at the university, the program has gained traction, including at events like Aarhus Festival Week and Aarhus Pride, where temporary return stations further facilitated reuse.

Despite high adoption rates, challenges remain, including expanding financial viability and increasing the number of return stations. The municipality has invested over 3.5 million kroner in the initiative, which must multiply its usage to sustain itself effectively.

Polls indicate strong satisfaction among citizens, with a significant portion using the system at least once and expressing a desire for more return options. Current success is promising, but comprehensive adoption remains contingent on public preference shifting from single-use to reusable options. Future developments may include broadening the scope of products covered by the system. The municipality plans to maintain support for REUSEABLE, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and responsible waste management in Aarhus.
