Key coffee-producing countries, including Brazil, Vietnam, Colombia, Ethiopia, and Indonesia, experienced an average increase of 57 days of harmful heat for coffee crops from 2021 to 2025. Temperatures above 30°C can adversely affect Arabica coffee, the dominant species produced globally.

In addition to heat, precipitation extremes such as hailstorms and floods further jeopardize coffee farms. As demonstrated in Brazil and Vietnam, unpredictable weather events pose grave threats not only to immediate harvests but also to broader agricultural factors like soil health and water management. Colin Hall, co-founder of Cupper’s Journey, emphasizes that such changes in weather patterns compel producers to alter their agricultural methods and adapt their business models for long-term sustainability.

The financial implications are dire; erratic weather contributes to volatile coffee prices, complicating supply chain dynamics. Oliver Broster, senior manager of coffee analysis at Expana, notes that the frequency of abnormal weather events has substantially increased, leading to erratic supply flows that further exacerbate pricing challenges in the market.

To address these issues, coffee brands must foster direct relationships with producers, ensuring fair compensation that enables farmers to invest in climate adaptation strategies. This approach includes providing access to agronomy expertise, regenerative practices, and systems for water management. Certifications like Fair Trade now emphasize climate resilience and sustainable practices.

Emerging alternatives such as Robusta coffee and the exploration of wild coffee species present additional opportunities for adaptation, potentially offering greater resilience against climatic stressors and diseases. By investing in these adaptive strategies, the coffee industry can better support producers facing the changing climate and ensure a sustainable future for coffee production.
