Starbucks Rolls Out ChatGPT Integration Experiment Allowing Customers To Customize Their Order With AI – CoffeeTalk
Starbucks has announced its intent to integrate ChatGPT into its ordering process, allowing users to receive personalized drink recommendations. Users can activate this feature by tagging @starbucks in a chat with the AI, which will prompt a beta version of the Starbucks app within the platform. The AI will provide suggestions based on users’ moods, cravings, or even images they share. For example, if a user requests an “iced pick-me-up,” ChatGPT may suggest drinks like the Iced Dragon Energy Drink along with several other options.
This initiative comes from Starbucks’ belief that customers often begin their ordering process with a specific feeling rather than a menu. Paul Riedel, the company’s senior vice president of digital and loyalty, believes that people engage with chat tools to articulate their experiences and desires. With this new system, not only will users obtain tailored drink suggestions, but they may also discover lesser-known menu items, enhancing their exploration of Starbucks offerings.
Chat input will allow users to customize their selections, facilitating a direct purchase through the Starbucks app. This move reflects a broader trend among retailers, as companies like Etsy and Walmart are also incorporating LLMs with the aim to improve customer engagement during product selection. Riedel highlighted the intention to connect with customers at the moment of inspiration, theoretically making it easier for them to find drinks that resonate with their current mood or situation.
