Starbucks Is Hoping Gen Z Will Prove To Be The Saviors Of Its Coffeehouse Culture – CoffeeTalk

Starbucks is focusing on attracting Gen Z to revitalize coffeehouse culture, as indicated by a recent survey conducted by Morning Consult. The survey revealed that 70% of Gen Z individuals intend to visit a coffee shop during Thanksgiving week, compared to only one-third who plan to visit bars or pubs. Notably, around half of these Gen Z consumers expressed a desire to enjoy a leisurely experience with friends or family during their café visits, a sentiment echoed by millennials as the second most likely demographic to do the same.

Meredith Sandland, Starbucks’ executive vice president, emphasized the importance of these connections during Thanksgiving, promoting the coffeehouse as a welcoming environment. This initiative aligns with CEO Brian Niccol’s vision to transform Starbucks into a “third place” for customers. Over the past year, Starbucks has implemented several modifications to enhance the café experience, including reinstating handwritten names on cups, revamping condiment bars, and redesigning café layouts to be more inviting with comfortable seating, favorable lighting, and music.

Despite these efforts, Starbucks reports challenges in achieving sales growth and has recently closed 1% of its North American stores. The emergence of drive-thru competitors such as Dutch Bros and 7 Brew, which prioritize quick service over in-cafe experiences, poses additional challenges for Starbucks. Nevertheless, the company remains optimistic that Gen Z will embrace traditional coffeehouse culture, opting for a more relaxed experience over the fast-paced mobile ordering trend.

The survey also noted that 81% of customers intending to visit a coffee shop on Black Friday, the peak shopping day of the year, may not specifically choose Starbucks, indicating a competitive market landscape for the coffee chain. Overall, Starbucks is banking on Gen Z to lead a resurgence in coffee shop visits and the social interactions that come with them.
