Laboratory Finds Too Many Samples Of Intestinal Bacteria Present On Coffee Machines – CoffeeTalk
Last year, the Zurich Cantonal Laboratory found problems in one in four samples of milk drinks from coffee machines. Too many intestinal bacteria were found in a number of samples. Cappuccino and other milk drinks from fully automatic coffee machines are popular not only at home but also in restaurants and petrol stations. However, if the complex machines are not properly cared for, they can become unhygienic.
Last year, 15 samples from coffee machines were analysed for various germs in the cantonal laboratory in Zurich. Exceeding the relevant guideline values indicates hygiene problems. Enterobacteria were exceeded in four of the samples, which are found both in the environment and in the intestines of humans and animals. Some of them can cause diarrhea. In another case, aerobic, mesophilic bacteria were measured above the guideline value, which includes numerous types of bacteria.
Most coffee machines that also prepare milk drinks use pasteurised or UHT-treated milk, meaning that when the milk enters the machine, it is usually almost germ-free. The problems only arise inside the machine when germs colonise milk residues. Swiss energy minister Albert Rösti calls secure energy supply a strategic objective. Two out of three Swiss believe that Geneva plays an important international role.
The International Committee of the Red Cross must cut its budget by 17% by the end of the year.
