Korean Coffee Giant Raises Coffee Prices, Citing Extreme Weather – CoffeeTalk
Korean food and beverage corporation Dongsuh Foods has raised its coffee product prices due to extreme weather, which is affecting supply. The company announced that prices for imported raw goods, such as coffee beans and palm oil, have increased exponentially due to the drought in Colombia, a major coffee exporter and source of Dongsuh’s coffee beans. Bogotá’s reservoirs are running historically low, causing millions of people and businesses to have their water turned off for 24 hours at a time every nine days.
These rising costs reflect a growing global trend, with rising produce costs in India and grocery prices in the U.S. rising due to the increasing difficulty of cultivating staples like corn and wheat. The cause remains the same: the changing climate, which increases the likelihood and intensity of extreme weather events like floods, droughts, and wildfires. These events can ruin crop yields, skyrocket grocery prices, and put lives at risk.
