Tropical Storm Trami has caused heavy rain in Vietnam’s key coffee-growing region, Gia Lai and Kon Tum, as the world’s largest producer of robusta beans begins harvesting. The rain has reached up to 160 millimeters (6 inches) since Saturday. Vietnam’s coffee harvest typically runs from October to April. Only about 7% of farms in Dak Lak province have started harvesting beans. Trami made landfall north of Da Nang, days after the Philippines, where it caused widespread flooding and killed at least 116 people. Vietnam is still recovering from the impact of Super Typhoon Yagi, which damaged rice crops and energy infrastructure in September. Vietnam’s coffee association forecasts production of 27 million bags for the 2024-25 season, compared to an estimate of 28 million bags from the US Department of Agriculture. Trami struck the Philippines early Thursday and moved inland into the South China Sea.
