Westby Students Gain Life Skills Through New Coffee Cart Program – CoffeeTalk

Special education students in the Westby school district are enhancing their confidence and life skills through a coffee cart initiative. The initiative, initiated last year by Nicole Buroker and a coworker, has been a massive success. The students, who brew coffee for teachers who have placed orders, interact with them in class, dropping off drinks, and putting smiles on their faces. Eli Jackson, a special education teacher, appreciates the interaction and the positive impact on their students’ lives.

The program is also enjoyed by parents, who find it the highlight of their children’s day. Maddy Carl, a seventh-grader who helps run the cart, believes the program is special because they work together as a team. The coffee cart is in partnership with local cafe Daily Brew Co., who provides materials at cost for the cart. Owner Kassi Olerud is open to working with other school districts to bring a coffee cart into their schools. Currently, the coffee cart crew focuses on coffee, but they hope to expand to hot chocolate and tea in the coming months.
