The Seattle-based company had been criticized for removing seating and blocking electrical outlets, discouraging those who prefer a more bohemian atmosphere. Starbucks is now leaning into the concept that it is the “third place” for people to spend leisure time after home and work. The company’s turnaround CEO, Brian Niccol, aims to go back to its coffeehouse roots while still catering to busy consumers who are happy to zip in and out. Starbucks has also aimed to revive handwritten notes and names on cups that gave stores a homier feel. The company’s goal is to be the solution for when people want to connect and when they need to do something quick and convenient.
