Spinn, the coffee maker for people who are too lazy to learn about coffee

Spinn’s journey began with a crowdfunding campaign in 2016. It has come a long way since then, raising $40 million in freshly brewed venture capital a year ago and announcing recently that its machine has received a software update that enables it to make cold brew. As a heat wave settles into the Bay Area, I figured it was worthwhile to investigate.

The machine has been on the market for a while, but its cold brew mode was just released, so I figured that was a good enough reason to examine it more closely. Spinn sent me a machine for evaluation. After a delightful unboxing experience (the cardboard unfolds like origami, and I was surprised there wasn’t a speaker playing a fanfare) and an easy, app-driven setup and installation, I was ready to brew some cold brew.

In an announcement, Spinn founder and CEO Roderick de Rode stated, “We created Spinn to reimagine coffee for the connected age.” “Our new revolutionary cold brew feature enables Spinn users to craft delicious, frothy cold brew in a more efficient, convenient, and environmentally friendly manner. No longer must individuals wait at least 12 hours to enjoy a cold brew at home. Now, they require less than 60 seconds.”

If you cannot be bothered to learn how to properly pull an espresso shot and money is no object, the Spinn coffee machine is an excellent option.

The only issue with this is that it is impossible to make cold brew in 60 seconds. It is iced coffee, not cold brew, to pull an espresso and pour it over ice. According to the coffee experts at Coffee Affection, “the cold brew method relies on a long and drawn-out extraction period, and it’s able to access the most stubborn flavor compounds within coffee beans.” These are, of course, the velvety, chocolaty nuances.” Even the mainstream coffee industry has recognized the subtle magic of cold brew coffee.
