Ready-to-Drink Coffee Sales Percolate – CoffeeTalk
Refrigerated RTD coffee experienced a strong 52-week period ending July 14, with dollar sales increasing by 7% YoY to $1.2 billion, while unit sales rose by 3% YoY to 218.5 million. Seattle-based Starbucks remains the leader in terms of dollar sales in this category, with sales topping $465 million for the period ending July 14. However, its unit sales declined by 1% to 74 million.
Stōk, the second-largest seller, saw a 28% YoY increase in dollar sales to $348 million, while unit sales rose by 23% to 63 million. GT’s Living Foods, a Beverly Hills-based company, led the way with dollar sales totaling $357 million and unit sales of 79 million. Health-Ade, the second-largest seller, saw dollar sales skyrocketing 23% YoY to $147 million, while unit sales increased by 25% to nearly 40 million.
Refrigerated teas also showed solid growth, with dollar sales rising by 6% YoY to nearly $1.7 billion. Milo’s, the No. 1 seller, posted an impressive double-digit gain, while GT’s Living Foods was a standout with a 120% YoY dollar sales gain to $24 million and unit sales increasing by triple digits to nearly 7 million.
In the canned and bottled tea and cappuccino/iced coffee subcategories, dollar sales increased by 1% YoY to $4.7 billion, but unit sales dropped 4% to 1.66 billion. Arizona is the No. 1 player in this category, with sales jumping by 2% YoY to $1.01 billion but unit sales dropping by 2% to 520 million. Liquid Death, the Los Angeles-based company, saw dollar sales rise by 335% YoY to $60.4 million, paired with a 305% unit sales increase to nearly 15 million.
Cappuccino/iced coffee saw overall YoY dollar sales decline by 5% to $3.4 billion, with unit sales suffering a deeper drop of 9% to 890 million. Victor Allen’s Coffee, the No. 9 seller, saw dollar sales jump by 186% YoY to nearly $18 million and unit sales skyrocketing by 189% to 4 million.
However, the cold brew category experienced a 30% YoY dollar sales drop to $147 million, and a similar 33% unit sales decrease to nearly 39 million. Starbucks also led the pack in this subcategory in terms of dollar sales, declining by 25% YoY to $100 million.
