Nespresso innovates compostable coffee capsules
The coffee giant Nespresso has developed a paper-based, home compostable capsule that will be tested beginning in the spring of 2023.
Nespresso is introducing a new line of paper-based, home-compostable capsules in an effort to make its coffee packaging more eco-friendly. Nespresso claims that the creation of the capsules required three years of research and development and that they do not compromise the flavor of the coffee.
According to Climate Collaborative, packaging accounts for approximately 5 percent of the energy used in the life cycle of a food product, indicating that it is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, there may be opportunities for sustainable packaging advancements in the coffee industry.
