Nick Berardi, the head roaster at the nine-year-old Mostra Coffee Co. in San Diego, was named the top U.S. roaster at the U.S. Coffee Championships.

Berardi defeated twenty-one other professional roasters at last month’s Specialty Coffee Expo in Boston. This summer, as America’s best coffee roaster, Berardi will travel to Milan, Italy to compete in the world championships. Mostra won its first national award in 2016 when Roast Magazine named it Micro-Roaster of the Year for 2020.

Mostra was founded in 2013 by Jelynn Malone, Beverly Magtanong, Sam Magtanong, and Mike Arquines, four Filipino-American friends. Mostra, which derives its name from the Italian word for “performance,” obtains its coffee beans from all over the world, including the Philippines. It operates coffee shops in Carmel Mountain Ranch, 4S Ranch, and Bankers Hill from its North County headquarters. Check out mostracoffee.com.
