How One Coffee Shop Is Addressing The Confusion Around Tipping Culture – CoffeeTalk
Red Tree Art Gallery and Coffee has shifted its approach to gratuity, addressing confusion among customers by raising prices to include an 18-20% tip. The coffee shop has removed its tip jars and emphasized the awkwardness of tipping, allowing customers to fill out the form for themselves. Owner Kyle Sweetland said the move was made in April to eliminate confusion and provide a more livable wage for employees in the service industry.
Customers are not concerned about the change, as they believe it reflects their commitment to providing great customer service. The minimum wage for a tipped employee is ridiculously low, and the company aims to provide a more livable wage for their employees. Red Tree’s prices have increased from $3 to $3.50, making customers feel less pressured to tip.
Customers have expressed support for the change, with Judy Zitnik stating that the coffee shop is not trying to hustle for a tip but is simply providing great customer service. Sweetland believes the industry needs to change, and the only way to do so is to get the word out there. The new model is working, and the coffee shop believes the industry needs to change.
