Dutch Bros Coffee Raises $2.3M for MDA in One Day
Dutch Bros Coffee has long supported the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s (MDA) efforts to fund research and assist patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and other neuromuscular diseases. However, it recently outdid itself by raising $2.3 million in a single day for the organisation.
Proceeds from Dutch Bros’ record-breaking 16th annual Drink One for Dane fundraiser will be donated to MDA, the leading nonprofit in ALS research, care, advocacy, and educational and professional programming. To date, the Oregon-based organisation has raised over $12,600,000 for MDA.
Dane Boersma, co-founder of Dutch Bros, was diagnosed with ALS in 2006 and died of the disease three years later. The fundraiser is named in his honour. Travis Boersma, his brother and the executive chairman of the 30-year-old company, is the other co-founder.
Sharon Hesterlee, PhD, chief research officer at MDA, stated in a press release, “We are incredibly grateful to the incredible Dutch Bros community for raising funds for ALS research over the past 16 years in partnership with MDA.” “Their leadership, broistas, and customers extend our legacy roots in ALS and our MDA family. These funds are essential to our investment in ALS research and enable us to continue strategically supporting our efforts to find treatments and cures.
“As a result of this funding, we have a robust pipeline of ALS drugs undergoing testing or in line for testing,” Hesterlee said. “Thanks to Dutch Bros, we are getting closer to bringing new drugs to the clinics for our families and crossing the finish line. MDA’s legacy in ALS began with Lou Gehrig and his family, and continues with Dutch Bros to commemorate the life of co-founder Dane. They are an integral part of the MDA family, and together we are altering the course of ALS.”
In May of each year, the drive-through company’s retail locations participate in the Drink One for Dane fundraiser, which began after Boersma was diagnosed with ALS as a way to raise disease awareness, support patients, and fund additional research into treatments and cures.
Travis Boersma said, “The community support for Drink One for Dane continues to amaze me.” Everyone who entered a store on that day is truly making a tremendous difference in the lives of so many.
