China’s Luckin Coffee, the largest coffee chain in the country, is set to open its first American location in New York City. The cafe, founded in 2017 and based in Xiamen, China, will operate a “100 percent cashier-less environment” and cater to pickup and delivery orders as well as dine-in spaces. The menu includes lattes, Americanos mixed with juices, and other espresso-based drinks. Luckin’s New York cafe will take over a Sunglass Hut store and is hiring for positions in Secaucus, New Jersey. The company has faced issues with fraud and bankruptcy in the past, including a $180 million fine in 2020. The Luckin expansion is the latest from Asia to open its first locations in the U.S., following the opening of Japanese retailers Uniqlo and Muji in Manhattan, Japanese bakery I’m donut? in Times Square, and Chinese brand Hey Tea, which sells “cheese tea.” The company’s expansion is the latest in a series of Asian companies opening their first locations in the U.S.
